  • Baseball Drops a Pair on Saturday at Virginia Tech

    The Central Connecticut baseball team dropped a pair of games at Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon losing the first game 14-12 and the second 16-8.  The Blue Devils, now 0-3 on the season, will play a single game at VMI on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.  Central Connecticut had 30 hits in the two games but dropped their third straight to open the 2008 season.

    In the first game had 18 hits in the game and rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth inning but fell just short of recording their first victory of the season.  in the second game the Blue Devils cut a Birginia Tech lead to 9-8 before the Hokies scored the final seven runs to earn the sweep of the weekend series.

    In game one sophomore Kyle Zarotney had three including his first home run of the season.  He added a pair of RBI in the loss.  Eight different Blue Devils drove in a run in the game.  Tommy Meade also recorded his first home run of the season.  Junior catcher Sean Parker had a double and a pair of RBI in a four-run ninth inning for CCSU.

    Sophomore Sean Allaire and freshmen Pat Epps and Sean Miller-Jones each had an RBI in the game.  Sophomore Anthony Scialdone drove in a pair of runs with a double.  Junior lefty Ken Kerski picked up the loss (0-1) in his first game of the season. 

    In the second game the Blue Devils cut a Virginia Tech lead to 9-8 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning but the home team would score the final seven runs of the game to sweep the weekend series.

    Senior lefty Matt Gianini picked up his first loss of the season for CCSU pitching 4.2 innings and allowing 10 hits and nine earned runs.  Donny White pitched a scoreless eighth inning for CCSU striking out one without allowing a base runner.

    Five different Blue Devils drove in a run in game two including three with two RBI each.  Kidd, Meade and Epps each drove in a pair of runs in the loss.  Allaire had three hits from the leadoff spot in the lineup while scoring a pair of runs.  Kidd also added three hits and scored a run while junior Casey Walko had a hit and scored twice.

    The Blue Devils return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. at VMI.
