Senior rightfielder Jak Kidd and freshman designated hitter Pat Epps each drove in a run but it wasn't enough for the Central Connecticut baseball team on Friday as they dropped an 11-3 decision in their 2008 season opener at Virginia Tech.  The Blue Devils, now 0-1 on the season, will face the Hokies in a doubleheader on Saturday before heading to VMI for a single game on Sunday.  The Blue Devils had four hits in the game while Virginia Tech scored nine runs in the first four innings to secure the victory.

The Hokies scored seven runs in the first two innings, including five in the first, to improve to 3-3 on the year.  It was the home opener for Virginia Tech.  After a five run first inning for the Hokies the Blue Devils scored a single run in the top of the second inning when sophomore third baseman reached on an error and later scored from third on a balk.

Virginia Tech scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend its lead to 9-1.  Junior righty Taylor Kosakowski pitched the first four innings for the Blue Devils and picked up the loss.  He allowed seven earned runs on eight hits while striking out two.  He also walked seven.

Pitchers Chris Chagnon and Logan Grimes each pitched solid innings for the Blue Devils in middle relief.  Chagnon, a sophomore transfer for CCSU, pitched two innings without allowing a hit or a run while walking just one.  Grimes, a freshman from Simi Valley, CA, pitched one inning and did not allow a hit.  HE walked three but did not allow a run in his one inning pitched.

Pat Dorr pitched one inning for CCSU in the eighth allowing three hits and a pair of earned runs.  The two runs for the Hokies gave them an 11-1 lead.

The Blue Devils plated a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning for the eventual 11-3 final score.  Junior Casey Walko walked to lead off the inning and scored on a triple by Kidd, his first of the season.  Epps then scored Kidd with a ground out to the shortstop.

CCSU and Virginia Tech will play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.  The Blue Devils then travel to VMI for a single game beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
