    Release: 07/09/2007
George Kawecki enters his 23rd season as a coach for Central Connecticut cross country and track and field.  He is beginning his seventh season as the men’s head coach.

In his 20-plus years as women’s coach at Central Connecticut, Kawecki instructed many outstanding athletes, including three-time All-American Adrienne Pitts-Weatherford.  Pitts-Weatherford still holds five school records. Kawecki also coached 2000 ECAC 10,000m champion Heather Gardiner and Nancy Wenzel-Sanregret, a participant at the 1996 Olympic Trials.  Gardiner, who was the first ECAC champion in Central Connecticut track history, also owns five school records.  Wenzel-Sanregret is currently coaching at Rice University.

Under Kawecki’s tenure, current Blue Devil junior Ry Sanderson took first place in the 10,000m run at last year’s Northeast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

In 1998 and 1999, with teams that also earned Academic All-American status for having a cumulative grade-point-average of better than 3.00, Kawecki and the Blue Devils brought Northeast Conference Championship trophies to New Britain.  The 1998 NEC women’s cross country championship was the first in team history.

Kawecki originally came to Central Connecticut as an assistant men’s track and field coach in 1979.  He took over the men’s program in 2002 and served as the head coach of the women’s program from 1986 until 2006.

Before coming to CCSU, Kawecki was the assistant track coach at New Britain High School from 1971 to 1978. Under his guidance, the Golden Hurricanes won two state championships.

Kawecki is a member of the NCAA Track and Field Coaches Association and the United States Track and Field Coaches Association.

The Memmingen, Germany native earned his bachelor’s degree from Emporia State University (KS) and his master’s degree from Central Connecticut.
