Junior Maddy Garber was named the Northeast Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete and a total of 43 student-athletes across Central Connecticut's five winter sports teams earned a place on the league's winter Academic Honor Roll it was announced Thursday. Additionally, nine CCSU student-athletes earned a place on the NEC Commissioner's Honor Roll for the winter season.
Garber added Women's Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete honors to her decorated season. A Graphic/Information Design major with a 3.44 GPA, the junior was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet this season after helping CCSU to its third straight conference championship. The standout set school- and NEC-records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke this season and qualified for the NCAA Championships in both events. Garber shared the honor with Katja Claesson of Wagner.
NEC student-athletes with a cumulative grade point average above 3.20 are eligible for the Academic Honor Roll, while the Commissioner's Honor Roll requires a cumulative GPA above 3.75.
The NEC announced its winter Academic Honor Roll, 539 student-athletes with a 3.20 or better grade point average, a 12.8 percent increase from 2015-16. There were 140 student-athletes named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll, recognizing those superior student-athletes with a 3.75 or better grade point average. The Commissioner's Honor Roll figure represents a 4.3 percent increase from a year ago.
The CCSU women's swimming and diving program, which won its third straight NEC title, had 15 members named to the winter Academic Honor Roll. The men's indoor track and field team had 16 student-athletes earn mention on the Academic Honor Roll to lead all Blue Devils programs. The CCSU women's indoor track and field team (seven), women's basketball (three) and men's basketball (two) all had multiple honorees.
