The Central Connecticut baseball team dropped a 1-0 decision on
the road at Long Island on Friday afternoon. Junior Jake
Matuszak had a pair of hits. With the loss the Blue Devils
fall to 23-23-1 overall and 15-14 in Northeast Conference play.
The teams will play a doubleheader at Long Island on Saturday
beginning at 1 p.m.
Long Island scored the only run of the game in the seventh inning. After they led off the inning with a double, they used a sacrifice bunt and a single to score the run and take the 1-0 lead.
Central had just five hits on the day, but threatened in the ninth inning. Junior Mitch Wells doubled with one out and after a fielding error by the Blackbirds, their fourth error of the day, had men on first and second with just one out. A ground out and a strikeout ended the threat and the game, as Central lost for the sixth straight game.
Matuszak had a pair of hits and reached base three out of four times to the plate in the game.
Sophomore Nick Neumann pitched the first 2.1 innings and allowed four hits and struck out one. Junior Harry Glynne pitched the final 5.2 innings allowing four hits and one run while striking out two batters.
The two teams will continue their weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
