Brown Pitches Blue Devils to First Win
Freshman lefthander Cody Brown picked up his first victory in a Central Connecticut baseball uniform, pitching eight innings in a 3-2 victory on the road over Navy on Sunday. Brown struck out eight hitters and allowed just four hits to lead Central to its first win of the season.
The Blue Devils are now 1-3 on the season.
Sophomore righty Josh Ingham picked up his first save of the season, pitching the final inning and striking out one. He allowed one hit.
The Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when sophomore J.P. Sportman scored on a wild pitch.
Navy scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the score 1-1.
The lead reached 3-1 in the top of the seventh inning with a pair of runs for Central. Sportman led off the inning with a double, and later scored on a double from junior Mike Washburn. Washburn later scored on an RBI groundout from junior Chris Renzoni.
Brown was spectacular in his first appearance for the Blue Devils. He struck out eight Navy batters, and allowed just the single run, on a home run, in the sixth inning.
Ingham's save was the first of the season and the fifth of his career. Sportman, senior Jake Matuszak and senior A.J. Lowers all had a pair of hits for Central in the win.
The Blue Devils are scheduled to play on Wednesday at Hartford in a single game at 3 p.m.
