Sportman Homers in Baseball Loss
Sophomore J.P. Sportman hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot, but the Central Connecticut baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision on the road at Hartford on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss the Blue Devils drop to 1-4 overall on the season.
Hartford improves to 1-6 with the win.
The Hawks scored first and led 3-0 after plating three runs against Blue Devil sophomore starter Tom Coughlin. Coughlin would go three innings and allow four hits and the three runs while striking out one. It was his first start of the season.
Freshman righty Brendyn Karinchak was impressive in his first outing in a Blue Devil uniform. The rookie lefty pitched four innings, allowed five hits and just one run while striking out five Hartford batters.
Offensively Sportman drove in the lone runs for the Blue Devils with his sixth inning home run. Central had nine hits, including two rom Sportman, while the Hawks had 11 in the game.
Senior Jake Matuszak also had a pair of hits for the Blue Devils. Classmates Danny Hickey and Mitch Wells each had doubles.
The Blue Devils will now travel to Philadelphia for a weekend swing at Temple, St. Joseph's and Villanova. They will play one nine-inning game at Temple on Friday, St. Joe's on Saturday and Villanova on Sunday.
Central will open the home portion of its schedule next Wednesday, March 14, hosting Albany at 3 p.m. on the CCSU Baseball Field.
