Cody Brown Tosses Shutout at St.Joe's
Freshman lefty Cody Brown pitched a complete game shutout and led the Central Connecticut baseball team to a 4-0 victory on the road at St. Joseph's University on Saturday afternoon. The win is the second of the season for Brown, and the Blue Devils improve to 2-5 overall on the season with the win.
Central took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Junior Bobby Migliazza singled to open the inning and went to second on a one out walk to senior Jake Matuszak. Sophomore Dylan DelaCruz doubled to right to score Migliazzo with the game's first run. With runners on second and third senior Mitch Wells singled to center to score a pair of runs and push the lead to 3-0.
Wells drove in the game's fourth run, giving the Blue Devils the 4-0 edge, in the eighth inning with a single to second base. Sophomore Josh Ingham walked and went to second on a sacrifice bunt from Matuszak. He advanced on a wild pitch, and then score on the Wells single.
Brown scattered eight hits and struck out one in the victory, his second in as many starts in his first season with the Blue Devils. Brown did not face more than four batters in any of the first six innings in the game. He face five batters in an inning just twice.
The Hawks had only one player reach third base in the game. In the third inning the Hawks singled with one out, but Brown forced a double play on the next batter, and then went on to retire 10 straight batters before St. Joe's recorded their next hit in the seventh inning.
Brown's ERA drops to 1.06 on the season, he has pitched 17 innings in his two starts and allowed just two runs. He hasn't walked a batter and has eight strikeouts.
Wells led the offense with his three RBI and two hits. Migliazza and DelaCruz each had two hits, and DelaCruz added an RBI.
The Blue Devils will finish their weekend trip to Philadelphia with a single game at Villanova on Sunday beginning at 1:15 p.m.
