Baseball Makes it Two Straight
The Central Connecticut baseball team won its second straight game on Sunday, topping Villanova on the road 7-4. With the victory the Blue Devils are now 3-5 overall on the season. They will play at home on Wednesday at 3 p.m. against Albany in their home opener.
Sophomore Dylan DelaCruz and senior Mitch Wells each drove in a pair of runs in the victory.
Sophomore righty Josh Ingham picked up the win in relief on Sunday, pitching the final 2.1 innings and allowing just one hit while striking out four batters. Freshman lefty Brendyn Karinchak pitched 2.2 innings and allowed six hits and one earned run.
Starter Jack Greenehouse went four innings allowing eight hits and three earned runs while striking out five Villanova batter.
The Blue Devils led from the start, scoring one in the first and two more in the third inning to lead 3-0. In the third Delacruz drove in his first run of the game with a double, and would later score on the first RBI of the game from Wells. DelaCruz scored on an error in the first inning for the 1-0 lead.
Villanova answered with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to tie the game 3-3.
Central answered in the seventh with an RBI double off the bat of Wells, giving the visitors a 4-3 lead. After Villanova tied the game in the bottom of the inning, 4-4, Central would put up three runs in the eighth for the 7-4 edge.
Sophomore Anthony Turgeon led off the inning with a triple, and scored on an RBI single from junior Mike Washburn. Ingham drove in a run with a double to left field, and then the second RBI double of the game from DelaCruz scored the third run of the inning.
Ingham would seal the win on the mound, facing only seven batters in the final two innings, and recording four strikeouts. He retired seven of the eight batters that he faced in picking up the victory.
DelaCruz and senior Jake Matuszak each had three hits, while Ingham and Washburn added two. Delacruz would score twice in leading the Blue Devils to their second straight victory.
Central returns to action on Wednesday, opening the home portion of its schedule, against Albany at 3 p.m.
