Sophomore J.P. Sportman had a pair of hits, but the Sacred Heart Pioneers topped the Central Connecticut baseball team 9-0 in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams.

Central is 4-6 with the loss, and 0-1 in NEC play.  Sacred Heart improves to 2-10 and 1-0.  The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Blue Devils.

Sacred Heart got on the board quickly, scoring four in the first, one in the second, and three more in the third inning to climb out to the 8-0 lead.

Central's junior righty Todd Savatsky picked up the loss on the mound.  Senior Harry Glynne pitched the final 5.1 innings, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out four Sacred Heart batters.

Glynne retired the first nine Pioneers he faced, and surrended just the one run in the bottom of the seventh inning.  He allowed just two base runners and faced only 18 batters.

Offensively the Blue Devils were not able to get anything going, putting up just five hits, including two from Sportman.  They didn't have a runner reach third base in the game.

Sportman had a double and a single, while seniors Mitch Wells and Danny Hickey, along with sophomore Dylan Delacruz each had a single.

The two teams will continue the weekend series at Sacred Heart on Saturday.  The seven-inning doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
