Baseball Tops Northeastern 4-3

The Central Connecticut baseball team won its third straight game, 4-3 on the road at Northeastern University on Tuesday.  With the win the Blue Devils improve to 7-7 overall on the season, and will play at home on Wednesday hosting Fairfield at 3 p.m.

With the score 4-3 with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Huskies loaded the bases.  Sophomore Tom Coughlin induced the game-ending double-play, when a line drive to first base was caught and the runner on first was doubled up.

Senior centerfielder Jake Matuszak led the offense with a pair of runs batted in.  Central took advantage of two Northeast errors in the second inning to score all four of its runs.

Nick Boyd earned the victory on the mound for the Blue Devils, pitching the first five innings and allowing just four hits and one earned while striking out two Northeastern batters.

Freshman lefty Mike Krukiel pitched the next 2.1 innings allowing two hits and one run.  Coughlin earned the save, allowing one hit in 1.2 innings and not allowing a run.  He forced the game-ending double-play to seal the victory.

Chris Renzoni also added a hit and an RBI in the second inning for the Blue Devils, who have now won three straight road games.  The Blue Devils had six hits in the game, and committed a pair of errors.  The Huskies had seven hits and two errors.

The Blue Devils return to action on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. hosting Fairfield.  They will host LIU Brooklyn in a weekend Northeast Conference series beginning on Friday at 3 p.m.
