Baseball's Win Streak Ends on Friday

The Central Connecticut baseball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end on Friday afternoon in the first game of a weekend Northeast Conference series with LIU Brooklyn.  The Blackbirds earned the 3-2 win with an unearned run in the top of the ninth inning to claim the victory.

With the loss, their first in five games, the Blue Devils are now 8-8 overall and 2-3 in league play.  LIU Brooklyn is 9-11 and 1-0 in the NEC.

The two teams will continue the weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. in New Britain.

LIU Brooklyn struck first with a single run in the third inning.  An RBI fielder's choice from Tyler Jones gave the Blackbirds the lead.

The lead reached 2-0 on an RBI triple from Pete Leonello in the fourth inning.  Julian Castro had walked and scored on the play.

Central tied the score on the bottom of the seventh inning.  With two outs senior Mitch Wells singled to the first baseman, and junior Tyler McIntyre hit his third home run of the season to deep right to tie the game 2-2.

In the bottom of the eighth inning the Blue Devils had runners on second and third with one out but were unable to take the lead.

LIU Brooklyn scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth.  With a man on first the Blue Devils committed an error on a grounder to put runners on first and third.  The next batter laid down a safety squeeze scoring the runner from third and making it 3-2.

Senior righty Harry Glynne pitched the first eight innings allowing just two runs on sven hits.  He struck out six LIU Brooklyn batters and retired the final seven batters that he faced after the Blackbirds loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth inning.

Freshman lefty Brendyn Karinchak picked up his first loss of the season, he pitched the ninth and allowed the unearned run.  He is now 2-1 on the season.

The Blue Devils and Blackbirds will continue their weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
