Baseball Tops LIU Brooklyn 5-3

The Central Connecticut baseball team won its third straight game, 5-3, over visiting LIU Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon.  The Blue Devils finish the weekend series taking 3-of-4 from the Blackbirds.  They are now 13-9 overall and 5-3 in Northeast Conference play.

The Blue Devils scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to open up a 5-0 lead.  The first run scored on an RBI single from senior catcher A.J. Lowers.  A bunt single from senior Mitch Wells loaded the bases for sophomore Dylan DelaCruz

DelaCruz singled through the left side to score the first two runs.  During the play a throwing error by the LIU catcher led to both Wells and DelaCruz scoring, giving the Blue Devils the 5-0 advantage.

The Blackbirds got two in the top of the fifth inning to make it 5-2.  They scored again in the sixth, an RBI single from Tito Marrero, to cut it to 5-3.

Freshman lefty Casey Brown pitched 5.2 innings allowing three runs on six hits and striking out two LIU batters.   He earned the first victory of his career and is now 1-1 on the season.

Classmate Brendyn Karinchak picked up his first career save, pitching the final 3.1 innings without allowing a run.  He allowed just one hit and struck out four batters.

DelaCruz finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the offense.

Central returns to action on Wednesday on the road at UConn beginning at 3 p.m.
