Baseball Completes Sweep of Bobcats

The Central Connecticut baseball team completed a four-game Northeast Conference sweep over Quinnipiac with a 13-7 home victory on Sunday afternoon in New Britain.  Freshman lefty Casey Brown won his second game of the season, and the Blue Devils won their seventh straight conference game.

With the win the Blue Devils improve to 15-9 overall and 9-3 in the NEC.  Quinnipiac falls to 3-20 overall and 2-10 in the league.

The Blue Devils struck first for the third straight game, putting up five runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Sophomore Dylan DelaCruz walked and went to second on a single from junior Mike Washburn.  Senior A.J. Lowers was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Delacruz scored on an RBI from sophomore Josh Ingham and Washburn scored on an RBI ground out by senior Jake Matuszak.  After a walk, sophomore J.P. Sportman plated a pair with a single through the left side.  The fifth run of the inning scored on a double from junior Tyler McIntyre, giving the Blue Devils a 5-0 lead.

Five more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning pushed the lead to 10-0.  A triple from DelaCruz scored two, and the third run scored on a sacrifice fly from Washburn.  One run scored on a single and an error off the bat of Ingham.  The final run of the inning scored on a sacrifice fly from Matuszak. 

The lead reached 13-0 in the fifth.  Delacruz and Washburn each drove in a run.  The final run of the inning scored on a wild pitch.

Quinnipiac put up three runs in the eighth inning to cut the lead to 13-3.  Four more in the ninth made it 13-7 before the Blue Devils were able to secure the victory.

Brown (2-1) picked up his second win of the season, pitching seven innings without allowing a run.  He struck out four, walked one, and allowed only four hits in the victory.  It was his second straight win.

DelaCruz finished the game with three RBI, while Sportman, Washburn and Matuszak each added two.  Washburn, DelaCruz, McIntyre, Matuszak and Sportman all had two hits in the win.

The Blue Devils return to action on Wednesday hosting Rhode Island beginning at 3 p.m. in New Britain.
