Glynne, Blue Devils Top Monmouth 3-1
The Central Connecticut baseball team snapped a four-game Northeast Conference losing streak with a 3-1 home victory over Monmouth on Friday. The game is the first of a weekend series with the Hawks.
With the victory Central is now 17-14 overall and 10-7 in league action. Monmouth falls to 20-13 and 9-4.
Senior Harry Glynne picked up his second win of the season, pitching seven inning and striking out eight Monmouth batters.
The Blue Devils struck first with a single run in the bottom of the first. With two outs, sophomore Dylan DelaCruz tripled to left center to score senior Jake Matuszak. Matuszak had singled to lead off the inning.
Monmouth threatened in the fourth inning, putting runners on first and second. Gylnne got out of the inning by striking out the side and not allowing a run.
The Blue Devil lead reached 2-0 in the fourth. With one out DelaCruz reached on an error and went to third on a single from junior Tyler McIntyre. He scored on a fielder's choice from sophomore Anthony Turgeon.
Monmouth cut it to 2-1 on an RBI double with two outs by Dan Avella in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the inning senior Mitch Wells led off the inning with a double to right center and went to third on a single by sophomore J.P. Sportman. Wells scored on a double play ball to push the lead to 3-1.
Glynne went seven innings allowing five hits and just one run. He struck out eight batters and walked a pair. Ingham picked up his sixth save of the season, pitching the final two innings and retiring all six batters that he faced.
The Blue Devils and Hawks will continue the weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. in New Britain.
