Brown Pitches Blue Devils to Split

The Central Connecticut baseball team won the second game of a doubleheader over Wagner on Saturday to earn a split of the two game in New Britain.  The Blue Devils rebounded from a 5-2 loss in the first game, and won the second 7-4. 

Freshman lefty Cody Brown pitched a complete-game five-hitter to win his fifth game of the season in game two.  He is now 5-3 on the season.

With the split the Blue Devils are now 22-21 overall and 14-13 in Northeast Conference play.  Wagner is now 19-26 overall and 12-11 in the NEC.  The two teams will finish the weekend series on Sunday with a single nine-inning game at 1 p.m.

In game one Wagner took a 1-0 lead with a single run in the top of the first inning.  They scored one more in the second and another in the third to push the lead to 3-0.

The Blue Devils scored a pair of runs in the fifth to cut the lead to one.  Sophomore Anthony Turgeon walked to lead off the inning and went to second on a single from classmate Josh Ingham.  A bunt single from senior Jake Matuszak loaded the bases with one out.  Following the second out of the inning, sophomore J.P. Sportman singled up the middle to score two runs and cut the lead to 3-2.

A sacrifice fly from Wagner's Eddie Brown in the sixth made it 4-2.  A pinch-hit RBI single from Cliff Brantley in the seventh made it 5-2.

Central struck first in the second game with a pair of runs in the second inning.  Junior Bobby Migliazza walked to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI triple from sophomore Dylan DelaCruz.  With one out DelaCruz scored on an RBI single from Ingham.

The lead reached 3-0 with a run in the bottom of the fourth.  DelaCruz doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a sacrifice from Matuszak.

Wagner scored once in the top of the fifth to trim the lead to 3-1.

A four-run inning in the bottom of the fifth pushed the lead to six.  Sportman tripled to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI single from senior A.J. Lowers.  Lowers went to third on a bunt single from Migliazza, and scored on a double from DelaCruz.  A two-ru single from sophomore Anthony Turgeon made it 7-1.

The Seahawks scored one in the sixth to make it 7-2.  Two more in the seventh cut it to 7-4.

Freshman Dominic Severino came in to get the final three outs of the seventh, earning his first career save.

Brown pitched six innings, allowing eight hits and four runs for the win.  He struck out three.
