Baseball Takes Three From Wagner

Baseball Takes Three From Wagner

The Central Connecticut baseball team scored four runs in the seventh inning to top Wagner on Sunday afternoon.  The Blue Devils (23-21, 15-13 NEC) erased a 2-0 deficit by scoring six unanswered runs over their final two at bats. Senior Mitch Wells had the big hit of the game a two-out, two-run triple that gave the Blue Devils the lead.

The Seahawks (19-27, 12-12 NEC) scored a run in the first and a run in the second off Blue Devil starter Jack Greenhouse.  After the second, Greenhouse settled in and retired 12-of-14 batters over the next four innings as he pitched into the seventh.

The Blue Devils got on the board in the fifth inning without the benefit of a hit.  Junior Bobby Migliazza walked to start the frame and came around to score on an RBI ground out by sophomore Josh Ingham.

Greenhouse started the seventh inning on the mound, but after a lead off single and a sacrifice bunt, he intentionally walked a batter and head coach Charlie Hickey went to the bullpen.  Greenhouse was lifted for sophomore Nick Boyd who came on and walked the first batter he faced, but induced an inning ending double play to get out of the jam without allowing a run.

The Blue Devils took the lead with three runs in the bottom of seventh.  With one out, senior Danny Hickey was hit by a pitch and Ingham singled up the middle.  Senior Jake Matuszak advanced the runners with a bunt, which set up second and third two-out for senior Mitch Wells.  Wells delivered a two-run triple to right center that gave the Blue Devils their first lead of the game.  Sophomore JP Sportman followed with a single up the middle that scored Wells and improved the Central lead to 4-2.

Sophomore Dylan DelaCruz led off the eighth inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Sophomore Anthony Turgeon followed with a single that scored DelaCruz.  After a bunt single by Hickey, Matuszack doubled to left center scoring Turgeon, but Hickey was thrown out at the plate trying to score Central's seventh run of the game.

Sophomore Nick Boyd pitched two thirds of an inning to earn the victory.  He did not allow a run.  Ingham threw the the final two innings to earn the save.  He allowed just three hits and also did not allow a run.  Boyd improves to 3-1 with the victory and the save is the seventh of the season for Ingham.

Greenhouse worked 6.1 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits.  He struck out three and walked three, but did not factor in the decision.

Matuszak and Wells each had two hits in the game.  Wells was the only Central player to drive in more than one run, both of his RBI came on his seventh inning triple.  Ingham, Sportman, Turgeon and Matuszak all drove in a run in the game.

The Blue Devils won three-of-four games to take the series from Wagner.

The Blue Devils return to action Tuesday at Fairfield at 3:30.  They'll play their final home game of the season on Wednesday, May 2, with a non-conference game against Hartford.
