Baseball Takes Two From the Mount, Qualifies for NEC Tournament
The Central Connecticut baseball team won a pair of games at Mount St. Mary's on Friday, winning the first 6-5 and the second 16-1. With the wins the Blue Devils are now 27-22 overall and 18-13 in Northeast Conference play.
With the two wins the Blue Devils have officially qualified for next week's Northeast Conference Tournament at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT. Central will be either the #3 or #4 seed in the tournament. Monmouth and Fairleigh Dickinson have also qualified for the tournament. The last seed remains to be determined, but will be either Sacred Heart or Wagner.
The two teams will finish the weekend series on Saturday with a single nine-inning game at 12 p.m.
In game two, juniors Mike Washburn and Tyler McIntyre each hit a home run and drove in four runs. McIntyre hit a pair of home runs on the day and drove in six runs.
Freshman lefty Cody Brown won his sixth game of the season in game two, improving to 6-3 on the season. He pitched six innings and allowed five hits and just one run in the win.
In the first game McIntyre drove in two runs and freshman Casey Brown won his fourth game of the season, pitching six innings and allowing just two hits while striking out six.
Central led 6-0 into the seventh inning, before the Mount scored five in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Nick Boyd came in to get the final three outs of the inning to earn his first save of the season.
Sophomore Josh Ingham was 3-for-3 with a solo home run in the first game. Sophomore J.P. Sportman was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and he also had four hits and four runs scored in the game two win. McIntyre hit a solo home run in the seventh, and also drove in a run in the first inning of game one.
It was all Blue Devils in game two, as Central recorded 18 hits and 16 runs to earn the sweep of the doubleheader. Sopomore Dylan DelaCruz had three hits, three runs scored and an RBI in the win. McIntyre and Washburn each drove in four.
