DelaCruz, Sportman and Boyd Awarded Post-Season Honors
Central baseball standouts Dylan DelaCruz and J.P. Sportsman have earned New England Collegiate Baseball League post-season awards for their 2012 summer season with the Keene Swamp Bats, the league announced Wednesday. In addition to the duo, junior Nick Boyd earned a spot on the 2012 All-New York Collegiate Baseball League Second Team for his pitching performance throughout the season.
DelaCruz, who finished the season with a .348 batting average and 63 hits, earned first team honors for his outfield performance. In 44 games and 181 at bats the junior posted ten doubles, nine homeruns, 40 runs and 39 RBI. DelaCruz entered the summer coming off of a stellar sophomore season with the Blue Devils in which he played in 50 games and finished first on the team in runs with 39 and in doubles with 19. He also earned a .326 batting average and racked up 62 hits and 25 RBI in 190 at bats.
Sportman earned NECBL second team honors and finished the summer season posting a .347 batting average over 173 at bats in 44 games. He racked up 60 hits, 44 RBI, 33 runs, eight doubles and eight homeruns. The junior entered the summer coming off of an impressive sophomore season with the Blue Devils in which he earned the highest batting average on the team, .353, posted 67 hits, 14 doubles, seven home runs and 33 RBI in 190 at bats.
Boyd appeared in ten games, starting in eight and pitched the most innings of any other teammate throughout the season (48.1). He was credited with six wins, the most on the team and ranked third on the team in strikeouts with 34. He allowed 48 hits, 32 runs (25 earned) and only one loss for the season. Boyd entered the summer following his sophomore season at Central in which he played in 13 games, pitched 20.1 innings and posted a 0.89 earned run average.
DelaCruz, Sportman and Boyd will rejoin the roster for CCSU this season and look to lead the Blue Devils during the Spring 2012 season.
