The Central Connecticut baseball team split a doubleheader with Quinnipiac on Friday afternoon in Hamden, CT. The Blue Devils (23-24, 12-15 NEC) dropped the first game to the Bobcats (14-32, 9-17 NEC) by a score of 11-4, before rebounding for an 8-2 victory in the second game. Senior Mike Washburn had an excellent day at the plate with five hits and four runs batted in.
The Bobcats used a five-run fifth inning to overcome a 4-1 deficit and earn the 11-4 victory.
The Blue Devils built their 4-1 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning and single runs in the third and fourth.
Junior Dylan DelaCruz singled to lead off the game and came around to score two batters later on a single by junior J.P. Sportman. Following a double-play, senior Mike Washburn delivered an RBI double to center that scored senior Chris Renzoni who had reached on an error as the second batter of the game.
Sportman doubled in the third inning and scored on an RBI single by Washburn and in the fourth junior Josh Ingham drew a walk to lead off the inning and, after a sacrifice bunt by junior Anthony Turgeon, came in to score on a base hit by sophomore Ryan Beal.
Quinnipiac plated a single run off CCSU junior Nick Neumann in the bottom of the fourth The Bobcats followed with a five-run fifth inning and a five run sixth inning to take an 11-4 lead.
Neumann falls to 4-5 on the season with the loss.
Washburn finished the game two-for-four with two RBI and Sportman went three-for-four at the plate. Beal and DelaCruz also had hits in the game.
Scott Donaghue had a big day for Quinnipiac. He had a three-run double in the fifth and hit a grand slam in the sixth to total seven RBI in the game.
DelaCruz got CCSU off to a fast start by leading off the game with a home run to center field. Senior Bobby Miggliazza followed with a single and eventually came around to score on a sac fly by Renzoni.
The Blue Devils extended their 2-0 lead with a three run third inning, which was fueled by a RBI single from Washburn, a RBI double by Renzoni and a RBI single by Ingham.
The Blue Devils added a single run in the fifth on a solo home run by Washburn.
The Bobcats scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning off Blue Devil starter Jack Greenhouse. Although, only one of the runs was earned and Greenhouse was able to pick a runner off of third base to avoid further damage.
Delacruz added his second home run of the game, again a solo blast, in the sixth inning that gave CCSU a 7-2 lead.
Greenhouse pitched six innings to improve his record to 5-1 on the season. Over his six innings of work, Greenhouse allowed just four hits, two runs, one earned and struck out four.
DelaCruz finished the second game three-for-four at the plate with two RBI. Both of his runs batted in came on solo home runs. Renzoni was two-for-three in the second game with three RBI.
The Blue Devils and Bobcats will wrap-up the series with a single game tomorrow afternoon.
