Baseball Drops Non-Conference Game at UConn

The Central Connecticut baseball team lost a non-conference game on the road at the University of Connecticut on Monday, falling 9-1.  The loss drops the Blue Devils to 13-15 overall on the season.  They'll play another non-conference game at Stony Brook on Tuesday.

This weekend they return to Northeast Conference action hosting Wagner in a four-game series beginning on Friday afternoon.

On Monday neither team got on the board in the first two and a half innings, but the Huskies took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the third.   A pair of hits, a hit by pitch and a wild pitched helped the Huskies to the early advantage.

Central answered in the top of the fourth, cutting the lead to 3-1.  Senior Josh Ingham singled with one out and then stole second base.  He scored on a single from starting pitcher Dominic Severino.

The Huskies added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to push the lead to 6-1.  A bases loaded triple from Jack Sundberg cleared the bases and gave the Huskies the five-run lead.

The lead reached 9-1 in the seventh inning when Bobby Melley doubled to drive in two and Ryan Sullivan also had an RBI double for the home team.

Severino picked up the loss on the mound for the Blue Devils.  He pitched three innings and allowed three earned runs on two hits while adding a pair of strikeouts.  Freshman Austin Salnitis pitched three innings and allowed five runs, two of them earned, on just two hits while walking four.

The Blue Devils are back in action on Tuesday on the road at Stony Brook beginning at 3:30 p.m.
