Baseball Completes Weekend Sweep of Wagner
The Central Connecticut baseball team completed the weekend sweep over Wagner on Sunday with a 7-0 win in the fourth game of the series. With the Sunday win the Blue Devils are now 18-15 overall and 9-7 in Northeast Conference play. Wagner is now 12-27 overall and 5-7 in the league.
Junior pitcher/first baseman Dominic Severino picked up his third win of the season pitching seven scoreless innings while allowing only three hits. Severino retired the first 14 batters he faced in the game before the Seahawks had their first hit with two outs in the fifth inning. He finished the game with seven strikeouts and just one walk.
Central got on the board quickly with the help of some sloppy defense from the Seahawks. The Blue Devils scored three runs on three hits and three errors by Wagner to take the early 3-0 lead. Seniors J.P. Sportman, Anthony Turgeon and Josh Ingham all singled in the inning and all eventually scored on a throwing error by Wagner.
Central added two in the bottom of the third, both unearned, on a two-RBI single from sophomore Connor Fitzsimons. The play scored Ingham, who had reached on a catcher's interference, and Severino, who had singled and then stole second base.
Two more runs in the fifth pushed the lead to 7-0. An RBI triple from freshman Pat Sirois scored the first run, and Sirois would score on a balk for the second.
The Blue Devil pitching staff held Wagner to just three wins in the four games over the weekend. They did not score a run in the final two games.
The Blue Devils will return to action on Tuesday hosting Albany at 3 p.m. in New Britain.
