Central Connecticut State University Director of Athletics Paul Schlickmann has announced that head football coach Jeff McInerney has received a contract extension that will run through the 2015 season. McInerney led the Blue Devils to a pair of Northeast Conference Championships in 2009 and 2010, and posts a six-year record of 42-25.
"Coach Mac has been the architect of two NEC titles for the Blue Devils and produced five winning seasons during his time in New Britain. He has made Central football a household name across the state of Connecticut and made this program a destination location for high school student-athletes. His leadership, work ethic and coaching ability have built Central football into a premier NEC team, one of the best in the region and a formidable program throughout the Football Championship Subdivision," Schlickmann said. "His passion, energy and sense of integrity about the development of young men is second to none. Jeff has continued to produce quality student-athletes who excel on the field, in the classroom and in the community and we are fortunate to have him leading us into the future."
McInerney posts a 42-25 record in his six seasons, and under his guidance posted a school-record 15-game home winning streak that stretched from 2008 until 2011. McInerney and the Blue Devils posted 38 wins in his first five seasons, the most by any team in the conference.
"When we started here we talked about being here for a long time and building a tradition," McInerney said. "Our goal is, and always has been, to build a successful football program while recruiting and developing quality student-athletes who graduate and contribute to society. I am grateful to have been the head coach here for six seasons, and excited to remain a Blue Devil."
The Blue Devils are 24-5 at home under McInerney. The two NEC titles in 2009 and 2010 give the Blue Devils four titles since 2004. The championship in 2009 marks the only time the Blue Devils have won the outright NEC title. Following that season Central advanced to the Gridiron Classic, marking the first-ever postseason game for the Blue Devils since the program's advancement to Division I 26 years ago.
McInerney's 42 wins are the second-most in school history, trailing only former coach Bill Loika who had 94 career wins. During his tenure the Blue Devils have averaged close to 30 points per game and finished among the national leaders in rushing and total offense in five of the last six seasons.
During his six seasons the Blue Devils have produced 40 All-Conference players, two Offensive Players of the Year and one Defensive Rookie of the Year. Among the All-Conference picks are 18 First Team selections and 22 Second Team picks.
