Hollomon, Blue Devils Run by URI

The Central Connecticut football team earned a 38-14 victory over Rhode Island (0-4) on Saturday evening behind 236 rushing yards by senior Rob Hollomon.  The Blue Devils (2-3) led 10-0 at the half and then broke the game open with 28 fourth quarter points.

Hollomon rushed 27 times for 236 yards and two touchdowns.  Hollomon broke loose for rushes of 54 and 74 yards in the second half.  Both plays went for touchdowns.  He also elapsed the 3,000 yard mark for his career in the victory.

The Blue Devils scored first on a 38 yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Nick SanGiacomo.  A field goal by sophomore Ed Groth in the second quarter gave the Blue Devils the 10-0 lead.

Rhode Island recorded the first score of the second half, going 53 yards in seven played capped by a 12 yard touchdown pass from Mack Lowrie to Charlie McKeeman.

After the URI touchdown, the Blue Devil offense exploded, largely behind the running of Hollomon who opened the fourth quarter with a 54-yard touchdown run and then followed with a 74-yard scoring run on the following possession.

SanGiacomo followed with his first passing touchdown of the day, connecting with junior Aaron Berardino for a 15-yard scoring play that extended the lead to 31-6.

SanGiacomo finished the day 15-of-23 for 148 yards and a touchdown.

The final CCSU score came on a seven yard run by redshirt freshman Quinn Fleeting with 2:34 remaining in the fourth quarter.  The score was the first of Fleeting's career.

The Rams added a touchdown with 59 seconds left to play on a eight yard run by James Caparell.  URI also converted a two-point attempt to set the final score at 38-14.

The Blue Devils posted 484 yards of total offense and 336 yards on the ground.  While the Blue Devil defense limited URI to 266 yards of total offense and just 60 rushing yards.

Hollomon finished the day with 3,135 career rushing yards.  He is the third player in the history of CCSU football to rush for 3,000 or more yards in a career.  He now needs just 213 yards to pass Stan House (3,347) for CCSU's all-time rushing record.

Defensively, the Blue Devils were led by six tackles by senior Shawn Robinson and three sacks, including solo sacks by sophomore Asia Bolling and freshman Shacor Privott.  Sophomore Ahmond Gomez recorded an interception for the Blue Devil defense and senior Andrew Murdock was credited with a forced fumble.

The Blue Devils are off this week and then return to action on Saturday, Oct. 11 against Duquesne in the annual Homecoming Game.  The game will be available to watch live on ESPN3.com.
