The Central Connecticut men's basketball team opened its 2009-10
season with a 67-58 setback against Fairfield at the Connecticut 6
Classic on Friday night. Sophomores Vince Rosario and Robby
Ptacek each scored 15 points and had four rebounds in the
loss. Junior captain Shemik Thompson had nine
points and four assists for Central. The Blue Devils return to
action on Monday night at 7 p.m. at Savannah State.
Fairfield started off hitting nine of their first 10 shots from the field and took a quick 18-10 lead with 14:13 on the clock. The Blue Devils responded and cut the lead to one at 22-21. Rosario hit his first two three point attempts in the game and senior Joe Seymore hit his first attempt to help bring the Blue Devils back to within one.
Fairfield hit 19-of-33 shots from the field in the first half and led 40-30 at the break. Central hit only 9-of-23 shots from the field in the first half, including 5-of-11 from three. Rosario had 11 at the break.
In the second half, the Stags opened up a 13 point lead at 51-38 with 13:10 on the clock. The Blue Devils answered with a 13-5 run over the next five minutes to cut the Fairfield lead to 56-51. Junior Markeys Deans scored six and Ptacek had a big three to fuel the run.
The Stags answered with a 9-1 run over the next three minutes to push the lead back to 13, and the Blue Devils would get no closer than nine the rest of the way.
Ptacek and Rosario each scored 15 to lead the Blue Devils. Rosario, a transfer who sat out last season, hit his first two three point attempts on the night and finished the game 3-of-9 from behind the arc. Ptacek hit 5-of-9 from the field and 2-of-3 from three in the loss. Thompson finished the game with nine points and a team-high four assists. He also added four steals in 29 minutes of action. He was in foul trouble in the first half and only played 12 minutes before the break.
The Blue Devils hit the road for their next game on Monday night. Central will play Savannah State in Savannah, GA on Monday night beginning at 7:00. Fans can listen on ESPN Radio 1410 and 1300 or online at CCSUBlueDevils.com beginning at 6:30 p.m.
