Freshman Ola Olamuyiwa of the Central Connecticut men's basketball team was sworn in as a member of the CCSU SGA Senate on Tuesday. Olamuyiwa was sworn in along with other new members of the body at the student senate's weekly meeting. Members of the men's basketball program attended the meeting as their teammate was among the senators sworn in.
"I wanted to be involved because I have a passion to serve people," said Olamuyiwa of his desire to be involved with student government. "When I got to campus I felt like I needed to be a part of an organization that will help me serve people."
Olamuyiwa is a native of Lagos, Nigeria and attended The Patrick School in Hillside, NJ. In addition to serving as the student government in high school he helped the Celtics earn a No. 6 state ranking and advance to the Non-Public, North B quarterfinals. He also attended McDowell High School in Erie, PA, where he helped the Trojans win the Class 6A District 10 championship. Since arriving at Central, in addition to becoming involved with the SGA, he had the opportunity to meet one of Connecticut's U.S. Senators, Chris Murphy, when he visited campus.
"This is great a great opportunity for Ola to become further involved in the CCSU community," said men's basketball head coach Donyell Marshall. "He will be able to grow as a leader among his classmates and it should help him become a leader among his teammates too."
"I believe as a leader one of your qualities, one of your responsibilities, is to be able to serve people and give back to others. Fortunately for me, last I year I was appointed as student government president at my high school. I want to translate that experience to the college environment and that is why I chose to be a part of the SGA."
The Student Government Association is made up of full-time undergraduate students at CCSU. The SGA Senate is the representative body of the SGA and its members, the executive officers and senators of the SGA, are elected by fellow students. The SGA senate acts as the voice of the students and is also responsible for promoting student participation in the various projects and organizations at the university. Other responsibilities of the SGA include allocatting the SGA portion of the Student Activity Fund to promote student clubs, activities and services. The SGA holds weekly meetings on Wednesdays at 3:05 p.m. in the Bellin Room of the Student Center.
