Ursa in Third at NEIGA Championships, Blue Devils Tied for Fourth in Team Standings

Sophomore Tom Ursa shot a 75 on the par 72, 6,610 yard Captains Course in Brewster, MA to lead Central Connecticut in day one action at the 74th New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships. The Blue Devils are tied for fourth in the 43-team field after posting a 313 team total. Ursa is alone in third on the individual leaderboard. He is three shots behind co-leaders Pat Fillian (Sacred Heart) and Michael Amato (Brown) and one stroke ahead of a group of 10 golfers. Fillian is one of three Sacred Heart participants in the top-10, helping give the Pioneers a nine-shot advantage over Dartmouth and Husson.

CCSU sophomore Eric Hawerchuk is also in the top-20 after first round play. He shot 78, one shot better than classmate Sam Pelletier (79). Freshman Keith Kwasnik carded an 81, and senior Tim Buczak shot 86 to round out the Blue Devil field.

As a team, the Blue Devils are tied with Bryant and UConn at 313. All three teams are two strokes behind Dartmouth and Husson.

The 43-team, 216-player field will be back on the Captains Course tomorrow morning for final round play.
