The Central Connecticut men's golf team captured third place at the Adams Cup of Newport, with a final tournament total of 893 strokes. The Blue Devils finished third out of 17 teams, led by junior Kevin Josephson's second place finish.
The Blue Devils were among the leaders throughout the event, shooting team scores of 300 and 298 on the first day. The 598 stroke first day placed the Blue Devils third heading into the final round of the tournament. Central secured the third place finish by shooting a 295 in the final round, remaining four strokes ahead of the University of Connecticut who finished fourth.
Josephson was the most consistent golfer in the field this week, shooting even par each round on the 7244-yard par 72 course. His tournament total of 216 left him just two strokes behind event winner Greg Eason of Central Florida. Senior Eric Hawerchuk also finished in the top ten. His 221 stroke performance was good for a share of ninth place. Hawerchuck followed up his opening round 76 with a second round 73, and then posted a final round of 72 today.
Freshman Daniel Morgan posted the third lowest Blue Devil score a 230 for the tournament, with rounds of 75, 77, and 78. One stroke behind Morgan was Senior Justin Hughes who posted rounds of 82, 76, and 73. Hughes' 231 tied him for 44th, while Morgan finished tied for 40th. Just five strokes behind Hughes was senior Sam Pelletier who shot a 236 for the tournament. Pelletier finished tied for 58th after rounds of 77, 79, and 80.
Central was the top finisher among New England Schools, falling to only the University of West Florida and the University of Central Florida. UCF captured both the team and individual honors, at the event hosted by the University of Rhode Island.
The Blue Devils will look to continue their success when they return to action on October 2nd, at the Yale University Golf Club.
