The Central Connecticut men's golf team was selected as the 2011 Northeast Conference Preseason favorite. The Blue Devils earned the top spot in a preseason poll of the leagues 10 coaches. Coach Kevin Giancola's squad finished fifth at last year NEC Championship, but a strong Fall season has the conference's coaches viewing the Blue Devils as the favorite.
A big part of the Blue Devils climb this season has been junior Kevin Josephson. The Berlin, CT, native finished seventh at last year's NEC Championship and then finished off 2010 with an outstanding Fall. He earned three NEC Golfer of the Week honors as he consistently shot under par, winning the Blue Devil Invitational and the Macdonald Cup at Yale. He also earned All-New England recognition after finishing the third at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships.
Also, back for the Blue Devils is senior Eric Hawerchuk. A native of Ontario, Hawerchuk was the 2009 NEC Individual Champion.
Central earned five of the 10 first place votes. Sacred Heart and St. Francis (PA) finished second and third, respectively, with both schools earning a pair of first place votes. Robert Morris and Monmouth rounded out the top five. Neither received a first place vote.
Fairleigh Dickinson finished sixth in the poll and claimed the final first place vote. Long Island, Wagner, Mount St. Mary's and St. Francis (NY) filled out the final four spots in the poll.
The 2011 NEC Men's Golf Tournament will be held at the Mystic Dunes Resort and Golf Club in Celebration, FL from April 29-May 1. Team scores will be achieved by adding the team's four lowest scores from each day. The top-10 finishers will be designated All-Tournament performers.
