The Central Connecticut men's soccer team upset preseason favorite Monmouth on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils used a second half goal and a Monmouth miscue to capture the 2-1 victory over the Northeast Conference preseason favorites.
Monmouth had not lost a conference game since the 2009 season. It marked only the fifth NEC loss for the Hawks since the 2005 season, they were 41-4-9 in their last 54 NEC games.
The Blue Devils captured their first NEC victory with the win and now sit at 4-6 overall and 1-1 in conference action. Sophomore Eddy Bogle scored the winning goal for the Blue Devils.
Central surrendered a first half goal to Monmouth as Kalle Sotka headed in Ryan Clark's free kick in the 35th minute. That goal gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead that stood until the half.
In the 54th minute of the second half, a defensive miscue by Monmouth resulted in an own-goal that tied the score.
Minutes later Bogle delivered an unassisted goal that proved to be the game winner. It was Bogle's first goal of the season and it gave the Blue Devils their first NEC win of 2011.
In the net, junior Anthony Occhialini stood strong against the Monmouth offense. Occhailini made three saves and allowed only one goal. He improves to 4-5 in the net on the season.
The Blue Devils will look to carry their momentum into next weekend's home matches against Robert Morris and St. Francis (PA).
