Menzies' Goals Lift CCSU Over The Mount

The Central Connecticut men's soccer team topped the Mountaineers of Mount St. Mary's 4-1 on Friday night.  Central improves to 6-6-2 overall and 4-1-1 in conference action.

Central displayed a high powered offense scoring a season high four goals against The Mount on a wet, soggy night in New Britain, CT.  The Blue Devils entered tonight's match tied for third in goals scored in the Northeast Conference, they now have 22 goals on the season.

Freshman Freddy Metellus punched in his second goal of the season in the 32nd minute of action.  The goal was assisted by senior Reece Wilson who sent a cross from midfield down the right side to Metellus.  The freshman then beat the defender up the right side and buried a shot into the top right corner of the net.

Central's second goal of the first half came in the 37th minute when senior Jesse Menzies was fouled hard and awarded a penalty kick.  The senior put his penalty shot passed The Mount's keeper putting the Blue Devils up 2-0.  The Blue Devils are now a perfect two-for-two on the season shooting PK's, both coming from Menzies.

Five minutes into the second half, Jimmy Ockford of Mount St. Mary's stepped into the box after being awarded a penalty kick and netted the Mountaineer's lone goal of the night.  The goal went passed CCSU keeper senior Anthony Occhialini in the 50th minute of play and set the count to 2-1, advantage Central.

The Blue Devils responded in the 67th minute when Wilson registered his first and only goal of the night, Central's third.  Menzies fed Wilson from the left side putting a pass into the box for Wilson who beat the defender and fired a shot into the net off of the right post.  The goal was Wilson's sixth goal of the season and the assists was Menzies' fourth.  Central went up 3-1 after the score.

In the final stretch of the game, Menzies was the benefactor yet again punching in his second goal of the night in the 73rd minute.  On an individual, unassisted effort, the senior took the ball through the top of the box splitting two defenders and rifled a shot passed the keeper into the top left of the net.  The goal marked Menzies' fifth of the year.

Occhialini played the entire match for Central and marked down three saves on the night.  Occhialini and the Blue Devil defense only allowed four shots-on-goal from the Mountaineers.  Central fired six shots-on-goal for the game off of 10 shots total.

The Blue Devils will return to their home pitch on Sunday, October 21st to host NEC in-state rival Sacred Heart.  Game time is set for 1 p.m. and will be held at the CCSU Soccer Field on the campus of Central Connecticut.
