Men's Soccer Tops LIU 2-0 in NEC Opener
The Central Connecticut men's soccer team opened up Northeast Conference play with a 2-0 home win over LIU Brooklyn on Friday night in New Britain. The win is the fourth in the last five games for the Blue Devils, all four coming via the shutout.
Junior goalkeeper Josef Abele picked up his fourth win and fourth shutout of the season, making two second half saves. Central outshot LIU 19-10 in the match, including 7-2 in shots on goal.
Central is now 4-5-1 overall on the season, and 1-0 in NEC action. LIU falls to 3-7-1 overall and 0-1 in NEC play.
Freshman Conor Qualter scored his first career goal with 31 seconds left before halftime to put the Blue Devils ahead 1-0. Qualter took a beautiful feed from the right side from sophomore Freddy Metellus and found the back of the net for the first time this season to give Central the 1-0 lead at the half.
Central dominated the first half outshooting the Blackbirds 9-2, including four shots on goal. LIU didn't have a shot on goal in the period.
The Blue Devils opened up a 2-0 lead with 11:12 to play in the game on the fourth goal of the season from senior Eddy Bogle. Bogle took a feed from Metellus across the box and beat the LIU keeper, John Connolly, to the top right corner of the goal.
The goal was the fourth of the season for Bogle, good for the team lead. The two assists for Metellus are his first two of the season.
