The Central Connecticut men's soccer team dropped its final Northeast Conference home game on Sunday, losing 3-1 to visiting St. Francis U. The loss knocks the Blue Devils out of the NEC Tournament picture with one league game remaining this season.
On Tuesday night the Blue Devils will host Yale in their final home game of the season at 7 p.m. It will be Senior Night in New Britain.
The Blue Devils are now 4-9-2 overall and 2-4 in NEC play with the loss on Sunday. The Red Flash are 9-5-3 overall and 4-2 in league action.
Central had a chance to take the lead with 19:29 left in the half on the second scoring chance of the afternoon for senior Freddy Metellus. Metellus, who had a shot go wide left earlier in the half, fired a shot over the keeper's head but it hit off the crossbar and the score remained 0-0.
After a first half that saw a pair of chances for each team, the Red Flash broke through just before halftime to take a 1-0 lead. After the Blue Devils had a chance in their offensive end, Pablo Medina launched a pass of the defense of the Blue Devils and found Mario Mastrangelo just outside the box. Mastrangelo made a move on the defender and then beat Central junior keeper Nick Velleca to the lower left side of the goal for the lead with 2:44 to play before the half.
Mastrangelo made it 2-0 in the second half with 38:38 to play. In a play similar to the first half, Medina fed Mastrangelo in the middle of the field and following a move at midfield he beat Velleca to the lower left corner for the two goal lead.
The Blue Devils got on the board on a penalty kick goal from senior Zach Zurita with 11:20 to play in the second half. Freshman Louis Beddouri was fouled in the box and Zurita took advantage with his third goal of the season.
Mastrangelo completed his hat trick and sealed the win with a late goal to push the SFU lead to 3-1.
The Blue Devils are back in action on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in their final non-conference game of the season, hosting Yale. CCSU will celebrate Senior Night prior to kickoff.
