Senior Matthew Whalen placed second in the 800 meters, while fellow senior Sean Smith took home third in the 400 meters and the Central Connecticut men's track and field team finished sixth out of 13 teams at the Sorlein Invitational on Saturday. Whalen crossed the line in 1:59.25 to receive eight points, while Smith's time of 50.85 seconds garnered six points for the Blue Devils.
Five other CCSU student athletes scored points in the meet. Juniors RJ Simeone and Ry Sanderson placed fifth and seventh in the 1,000 meters and one mile run, respectively. Simeone finished his event in 2:33.26, while Sanderson recorded a time of 4:23.77. Sophomore Robert Weston was the second Blue Devil to finish in the 800 meters, placing eighth in a time of 2:01.47. Freshmen Matt Berube and Tristan Roberts led the field events for CCSU. Berube placed eighth in the long jump, distancing 20 ft. 2.5 in., while Roberts took home eighth in the triple jump, recording a distance of 42 ft. 4.25 in.
The Central Connecticut team finished with 32 points to finish in sixth place. The University of Connecticut won the team meet with 169 points. Southern Connecticut finished second and Stonehill placed third with 72 and 59 points, respectively.
