A pair of Central Connecticut track and field athletes will travel to Indiana University this week for the NCAA East Preliminary Round. Sophomore sprinter Aaron Radden and junior thrower Rashad Williams both qualified for the East Preliminary with their performances during the 2011 outdoor season. Radden will be running in the 200 meter and Williams will be competing in the shot put. To qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary both Radden and Williams had to rank among the eastern United States' top-48 athletes in their events.
Radden captured both the 100 and 200 meter sprint titles at the 2011 Northeast Conference Outdoor Championships. In only his second year, Radden has already captured six NEC individual titles. He is seeded 40th for the East Preliminary with a time of 21.21 seconds. Radden's top 200 meter time during the Spring season was 21.09 seconds at the LSU Alumni Gold Meet, unfortunately that time could not be used because tail winds were just above the allowable standard.
Williams earned his trip to the East Preliminary by unleashing a monster throw at the historic Penn Relays. Williams' best mark of the season came at that meet, a 17.13 meter (56' 2.5") toss. That throw earned Williams a victory in the Eastern College Shot Put at the Penn Relays and earned him the 37th seed at the East Preliminary.
Radden's 200 meter time and Williams' shot put mark are the top performances among NEC athletes in those events this season.
To qualify for the NCAA Championships athletes must finish in the top-12 in their event at the NCAA East or West Preliminary. The top-24 performers, 12 from each preliminary, will then meet at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, from June 8-11.
The NCAA East Preliminary will run from May 26-28, so check CCSUBlueDevils.com for the results of the Blue Devils in action this weekend.
