Central Connecticut track and field sophomore Brian Biekert was tabbed as the Northeast Conference Track Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Biekert earned the honor with his performance in the one mile run at the University of Albany Great Dane Classic in New York, NY on Friday.
Biekert took third in the event, crossing the finish line in 4:12.54, shattering his previous collegiate personal best of 4:24.00. With his time, Biekert added his name to the list of NEC student-athletes to qualify for IC4A competition in March. He also took the NEC lead in the event and came in less than a second over the standing CCSU record set in 1987.
This is the first time in his career that the Groton, CT native has earned NEC Athlete of the Week honors. The Blue Devils have boasted two 2013 NEC Track Athletes of the Week in two out of three weeks. Biekert joins fellow Blue Devil Aaron Radden on the 2013 Indoor Track and Field list.
Biekert and the Blue Devils will return to action this Friday, January 25, at the Boston University Terrier Invitational in Boston, MA.
