The Central Connecticut softball team won a pair of one-run
games on Sunday and swept a Northeast Conference doubleheader vs.
St. Francis (PA) on Sunday. Central won the first game 6-5 and
held on for a 5-4 win in the second game. With the wins the Blue
Devils are now 10-9-1 overall and 2-0 in NEC play.
In game one, the Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single from sophomore Kelsey Barlow. The Red Flash tied it up with a single run in the top of the second inning. Central took a 2-1 lead in the second on an RBI double from catcher Kat Knowles.
The Red Flash took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the fourth inning. Central committed a pair of errors in the inning, only two of the runs were earned. They led 5-2 after an unearned run in the top of the fifth.
The Blue Devils cut the lead to one, 5-4, when Barlow hit a two-run home run to right center with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
Central scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead. With the bases loaded and two outs, junior Rebecca Mussatti singled to center to score both runs and give the Blue Devils back the lead.
Sophomore Jordan Tingleypicked her fourth win on the mound for CCSU, pitching a complete game and allowing just three earned runs on nine hits while striking out three. After the Red Flash took a 5-2 lead, she retired seven of the final eight batters she faced, including five straight to end the game.
In the second game the Blue Devils took the lead with an RBI single in the first inning from Knowles. Freshman Tessa Browns's RBI groundout in the bottom of the third upped the lead to 2-0.
The lead reached 5-0 in the fifth inning. With one out, Brown doubled to deep right center to score two runs. She scored on an RBI double from Barlow.
The Red Flash scored four unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 5-4. Central made a pair of errors in the frame to help the Red Flash cut the lead to one.
Senior Elizabeth Montemurro pitched the complete a complete game for the Blue Devils to win her second game of the season. She did not allow an earned run and struck out three in the victory.
