The Central Connecticut softball team (16-9, 6-0 NEC) will host the Sacred Heart Pioneers (16-11, 2-2 NEC) this Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at the CCSU Softball Field. The Blue Devils will follow the NEC match-up with another on Sunday against the Saint Francis University Red Flash (15-12, 0-0 NEC), also at home.
Fans can follow the action live for all four games via LIVE STATS.
The Blue Devils are riding an eight-game winning streak that includes six consecutive NEC victories. Last week, the Blue Devils swept the Bryant Bulldogs to keep the undefeated conference streak alive.
Central is 8-10 against Sacred Heart since 2004. Last season, the Blue Devils topped the Pioneers in both contests, 2-0 and 10-1, at Sacred Heart.
CCSU swept the Red Flash last season as well, 6-2 and 7-5, in Loretto, PA. The Blue Devils are 5-1 over Saint Francis U since 2010.
Central pitcher Laura Messina has already broken the CCSU career shutout record this season and looks to break the CCSU career strikeout record this weekend. The sophomore currently ranks second with 303 career strikeouts and is just 11 away from breaking the record.
Messina currently ranks 17th in the nation in shutouts and 48th in earned run average. Joining her in the national rankings is classmate Kat Malcolm who is currently 40th in runs per game. Freshman Eileen Purcell, junior Tessa Brown and senior Kelsey Barlow are ranked 87th, 134th and 138th, respectively, as the "toughest to strike out."
