Kerrianne Dugan scored 17 points and recorded five rebounds as Central Connecticut State University got its first win of the season, defeating Fordham at home 64-57. The junior forward also tallied two assists and three steal in the victory. Sophomore Shontice Simmons added 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists as the Blue Devils improved to 1-2 on the season.
The Blue Devils got off to a quick start, scoring the first 11 points of the game. Dugan recorded four points and an assist to freshman Kirsten Daamen during the 6:07 stretch. Daamen's jumper from the right side opened the scoring for CCSU. The two squads played even basketball for the next seven minutes of play, as Fordham cut it to 17-7 with 6:23 remaining in the opening half. Dugan scored on a driving layup on the next play to give her 11 out of Central's first 19 points of the game.
Fordham then scored the next six points to cut the CCSU lead to 19-13 on two free throws by senior Randall Hurst. Central sophomore Alexzandria Dowdy stopped the Rams' run when she stole the ball near half court and went in for the uncontested layup to make it 21-13 with 2:00 remaining in the half. The Blue Devils held a 25-17 lead at the intermission. Neither team shot the ball well in the opening frame, but it was CCSU that held the 37.0 to 25.0 field goal percentage advantage. Central also did not give up a three pointer during the half.
The Rams opened up the second half with one of sophomore Becky Peters' four three pointers on the night. CCSU slowly built on their five point lead and increased it to double digits for the first time of the half when junior Leanne Crockett connected on a three pointer of her own to make it 43-33 with 12:13 remaining in the game. Simmons assisted her on the play. The Rams got right back into the game with consecutive layups by Hurst and junior Kyara Weekes.
After another three by Peters cut the Blue Devil lead to 53-49 with 4:02 left, a layup by Simmons and a jumper by senior P.J. Wade gave CCSU the cushion they needed to finish off Fordham on the free throw line in the final three minutes. Wade got the ball as the shot clock was under ten. She faced up her defender and drove lane before fading for two points. The Blue Devils went 6-8 from the foul line with under 1:00 left to play which sealed the game.
Crockett finished with 11 points and nine rebounds, just missing a third straight double-double. Wade was the second high scorer for CCSU, tallying 12 points on the night. Daamen recorded a career high nine points on 3-3 shooting to go along with six rebounds and three assists.
Fordham was led by Peters and Hurst, who scored 23 and 20 points, respectively. They each recorded seven rebounds, while it was junior Kristina Bell the led the defense with five steals in the loss.
The Blue Devils are now 1-2 and will next travel to Brown on Saturday November 21 for a 1:00 game with the Bears.
