Simmons Scores 19 In Blue Devils' 62-59 Loss at Brown

Junior Leanne Crockett recorded her third double-double in four games, while sophomore Shontice Simmons tallied a game high 19 points, but Central Connecticut State University (1-3) fell to Brown University (1-2) by a score of 62-59 on Saturday night in Providence. Crockett tallied 16 points, on three three-point baskets, and 13 rebounds for her double-double. Simmons connected on four threes in the first half to get the Blue Devils out to a 34-28 hafltime lead.

The Blue Devils came out gunning as their first five baskets of the game were from three-point range. Simmons knocked down three from down town within the first five minutes of play, while Crockett tallied two three-pointers to give Central a 15-4 lead with 14:15 remaining in the opening half.

The Bears then scored the next six points on two three-pointers of their own by freshman Sheila Dixon. Brown got within three points at 31-28 on a put back layup by sophomore Aileen Daniels. Daniels tallied three two point baskets and one three-pointer in the final 6:42 of the first half to get the Bears back in the game. Simmons connected on her fourth three of the half from just inside half court to put Central up 34-28 at the intermission.

After Brown scored the first five points of the second half to make it 34-33, CCSU went on a 7-2 run on five points by Crockett, including her third three of the game, and a bucket from junior Kerrianne Dugan to increase the Blue Devil lead to 41-35 just 3:00 into the second half.

Central went scoreless over the next three and a half minutes and gave up six straight points as Brown tied the game for the first time since 0-0 on senior Courtney Lee's first basket of the game. Brown took its first lead of the game at 58-57 on a layup by senior Natalie Bonds with 3:33 left in the game. The Bears would score four points to Central's two to finish the game with a 62-59 victory.

Dugan and junior Justina Udenze both reached double-figure rebounds in the game. Dugan grabbed 10 to go along with six points and two assists, while Udenze recorded 11 boards, seven points and a block. Senior Emily Rose chipped in with five points, including a three-pointer, in her first action of the season.

The Bears were led by Daniels' 17 points and five rebounds. Dixon added 11 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks and three steals in the victory.

CCSU will have a week off before traveling to Colgate on Saturdy, November 28 for a 1:00 p.m. start.
