Juniors Kerrianne Dugan and Leanne Crockett both recorded double-doubles to lead Central Connecticut State University (2-3) to a 61-43 road victory over Colgate (5-1) on Saturday afternoon. Dugan led the Blue Devils' with game highs of 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Crockett tallied 12 points and 10 boards for her fourth double-double in five games this season.
CCSU scored the first nine points to open the second half to take a 36-25 lead with 13:38 remaining in the game. It was a cushion the Blue Devils wouldn't let go of the rest of the game as they never led by less than nine the rest of the game. The stretch was highlighted by a traditional three point play from freshman Brooke Bailey off a no-look pass from sophomore Shontice Simmons.
A 10-2 run in a three minute span of three layups by Crockett and two by Dugan gave Central a 49-31 lead with 7:47 left to play. Colgate came back with a 10-2 run of its own, but it was not enough as the Blue Devils left with the 61-43 victory.
After Crockett scored the first two points of the game on a jumper from the righ baseline, CCSU went scoreless for the next eight miuntes, giving Colgate a 7-2 lead 8:20 into the opening period. Two free throws and a fast break layup by Simmons with a forced turnover by the Blue Devil press in between, got Central right back into the game at 7-6.
CCSU took the lead for the first time since 2-0 when Simmons hit a three-pointer to make it 16-15. The next trip down court freshman Kirsten Daamen missed a jumper, but Bailey saved it from falling out of bounds by throwing it over her shoulder to a wide open Daamen who connected on her second opportunity. Bailey then stole the ball at half court and fed Simmons for another fastbreak layup to take a 20-15 lead with 00:00 remaining in the half.
The Blue Devils went into halftime with a 27-25 lead after a three-pointer by Colgate's junior Sami Kozlowski. CCSU recorded only eight turnovers and held a 23-16 rebounding advantage at the break.
Dugan and Crockett led the Blue Devils with 14 and 12 points, respectively, and were the first pair of CCSU teammates to record double-doubles in the same game since Dugan and junior Justina Udenze achieved the feat against St. Francis (NY) on February 21 of last season. Crockett added a game high five steals in the victory.
Simmons finished the game with nine points, eight rebounds and three assists, while sophomore Gabrielle Oglesby chipped in with 10 points in the victory. The freshman duo of Bailey and Daamen recorded five and seven points, respectively. The former finished with six rebounds, while the latter tallied four boards and a block for the Blue Devils.
