The Central Connecticut women's basketball team volunteered their time on Saturday May 7, to help with the 2011 CT Race in the Park. The event sponsored by the CT Breast Health Initiative Inc. raised money for breast cancer research and was held in New Britain's Walnut Hill Park.
The women's basketball team participated in the event by selling raffle tickets on the day of the race. The CT Race in the Park is the signature fundraising event held each year by the CT Breast Health Initiative. This year's Honorary Race Co-Chairs were Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy and Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman.
The event raises money through donations that are pledged towards race participants. Race participants can pre-register their teams on the CT Breast Health Initiative website.
While the Blue Devils duties selling raffle tickets prevented them from running in the race, it did provide them with an additional positive experience. "The really great part about selling tickets was getting to meet so many of the participants and supporters," assistant coach Liz Stich said. "Even if they said no to the tickets we were still able to interact with some wonderful people and show that CCSU cares about the community."
In addition to the women's basketball team, CCSU Director of Athletics Paul Schlickmann participated in the 5K run and Assistant Athletic Director Molly McCarthy completed the 4K walk.
The Central Connecticut Women's basketball team is coming off one of its most successful seasons as they reached the Northeast Conference semifinals and won 19 games.
