The Central Connecticut women's basketball team has announced the addition of four student-athletes for the 2011-12 school year. All four players will be enrolling at CCSU and each will have the opportunity to make an early impact on a young Blue Devil squad that lost a record setting senior class in 2011.
The incoming class addresses the loss of four seniors, two guards and two post players from the 2011 squad. Kaley Watras and Danielle Davis will join the Blue Devils perimeter players this season and Johnna Fisher and Amanda Harrington will step into the post for Coach Beryl Piper's squad.
Johnna Fisher is a native of Winthrop, MA, and at 6'3" she stands to contribute under the basket as the Blue Devils try to replace the offensive production of Justina Udenze and the defensive production of Leanne Crockett. Fisher was named the most valuable player on her team during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons while helping her team to a Northeastern Conference Championship in 2008.
Another Massachusetts native is also looking to claim some of the open minutes in the post, Amanda Harrington. Harrington is a native of Oxford, MA, and also brings height at 6'3". Harrington has been named to the Dual Valley Conference First Team in her junior and senior seasons. In addition she was named the conference's most valuable player in both of those seasons.
"Fisher will provide us with a great post presence to block shots and score around the rim," Piper Said. "Despite her height, Harrington has enough agility to run the floor and can score underneath or facing up to the basket."
The Blue Devils must also replace starting guards Kerrianne Dugan and Alexzandria Dowdy. Richmond, VA, native Danielle Davis is one of two freshmen who will compete for time in the backcourt. A 5'8" guard Davis played her high school ball at Oakton High School, her team won the Concorde District and Regional Championship in 2010. A Concorde District Honorable Mention in 2009-10, she was selected to play in an All-Star Game as a senior that featured players from across Northern Virginia.
The final piece of the incoming class will also contribute in the backcourt and is the lone Connecticut native in the class of 2015. A product of Glastonbury, 5'9" guard Kaley Watras will compete for time on the perimeter for the Blue Devils. Watras was named to the CHSCA L-LL All-Star Team this Spring as a senior. In 2009, she was named Central Connecticut North All-Conference and for the last two seasons she has served as captain of her high school squad.
According to Piper, "Davis is an all around player with great court vision and a nice shooting stroke. While Watras is a passionate defender who can find open teammates in transition or in the halfcourt."
The Blue Devil coaches and players look forward to welcoming these four student-athletes to the CCSU campus this summer.
