The Central Connecticut women's basketball team will open the 2011-12 season at home against the University of Maine this Friday. The tip is set for 7:00 PM and admission to Detrick Gym will be free.
The Blue Devils are coming off another strong season in which they posted a 19-11 record and reached the Northeast Conference Tournament Semifinals for the third consecutive season. Over the last three seasons Coach Beryl Piper and the Blue Devils have won 49 games including a 62-57 victory over Maine last season.
This marks the second straight season that the Blue Devils have opened at home. Last year Central topped Hartford 46-41 in the opener, a victory that sparked a program-best 5-0 start to the season.
The Blue Devils posted an impressive 10-2 record at home last season, including a 3-0 record in non-conference games. In addition to Friday's game with Maine the Blue Devils will also host New Hampshire, Holy Cross, Rhode Island and Siena in non-conference games this season.
The 2011-12 squad will be young, but returning players Kirsten Daamen, Rachel Chandler and Jaclyn Babe are ready to lead the team. Those three players were recently selected as captains by their teammates.
