The Central Connecticut women's basketball team fell to La Salle, 70-46, on Wednesday night at Detrick Gym. The Blue Devils (4-4) were led by 15 points from senior Jaclyn Babe. La Salle (2-9) had a pair of players share a game-high 22 points, Brittany Wilson and Ebonee Jones.
La Salle opened the game with a 6-0 run and the Explorers never looked back. Central was unable to tie or take the lead at any point in the game. The Explorers led 10-2 three minutes into the game and had expanded the lead to 25-12 after 11 minutes.
Jaclyn Babe led the Blue Devils in the first half with nine points in the first half. Sophomore Kaley Watras added six points and five rebounds for the CCSU in the half.
La Salle led by as many as 20 points in the first half and closed the period with a 44-26 lead.
Junior Jessica Babe scored the first points of the second half with a three from the left wing. A free throw by Watras cut the deficit to 14 points, the closest the Blue Devils would get in the second half, but La Salle answered with a run that pushed its lead to 21 points minutes later.
La Salle led by as many as 26 points in the second half.
A small run over the final five minutes, including a basket by senior Jameilia Dillon, helped the Blue Devils cut the final deficit to 24 points.
Jaclyn Babe led CCSU with 15 points and Watras also reached double-digits with 11. Watras was also CCSU's leading rebounder with seven.
Prior to the game, a moment of silence was held to remember the 26 victims and the families of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. All of the players, coaches, staff and fans in attendance at the game wore green and white ribbons, the school colors of Sandy Hook Elementary.
The Blue Devils will return to action on Friday night at 6 p.m. The women's basketball team will play Rider in the first game of a doubleheader at Detrick Gym. The CCSU men's team will host Northeastern at 8 p.m. in the second game.
