The Central Connecticut women's basketball team opens Northeast Conference play against the Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils (4-7) and Knights (3-7) are scheduled to tip-off at 1 p.m. at Detrick Gymnasium in the first game of a double-header. The CCSU and FDU men's basketball teams are scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. tip-off.
Today's Game • CCSU and FDU were selected to finish in a tie for ninth place by the conference's coaches in the annual preseason poll, but as NEC play begins the Blue Devils and Knights sit near the top of the league in non-conference winning percentage.
Series History • The Blue Devils hold a 19-15 record in the all-time Division I series between these programs, including a pair of victories last season. Under head coach Beryl Piper the Blue Devils are 9-4 against the Knights, inlcuding a 62-51 victory in the 2009 NEC Tournament quarterfinals. CCSU is also 5-1 against the Knights at Detrick Gym during Piper's tenure with five straight victories.
CCSU in NEC Openers • The Blue Devils are looking for their first Northeast Conference opening victory since the 2008-09 season. However, CCSU has won its first home NEC contest as recently as the 2012-13 season - a 59-50 victory over Bryant at Detrick Gym.
A Break in the Action • The Blue Devils had 17 days off following a Dec. 13 game against Army. CCSU ended the layoff on Tuesday night against ACC member Syracuse.
Three Straight Against NCAA Tournament Teams • CCSU's last three games have come against teams that played in last season's NCAA Tournament. The Blue Devils played Fordham, Army and Syracuse. Fordham and Army won their respective conferences to claim automatic berths, while the Orange - an Atlantic Coast Conference program - earned an at-large bid.
