Women's Hoop Falls To The Mount 54-50

The Central Connecticut women's basketball team dropped its first Northeast Conference game on Monday night 54-50 at Knott Arena in Emmitsburg, MD. The Blue Devils fall to 3-1 in NEC play and 7-8 overall on the season. Mount St. Mary's improves to 3-1 in the NEC and 5-10 overall on the season. CCSU was led by junior TeJahne Malone's 15-point, 10-rebound double-double.

The back-and-forth affair featured multiple runs by both teams throughout the game and saw the two teams deadlocked nine different times and the lead change hands 10 times.

In the first half, the Mountaineers used an 11-2 run and held the Blue Devils scoreless for over six and a half minutes during that run to climb out to an early 16-9 lead.

Following a Blue Devil timeout, CCSU responded in a big way with a three-pointer from senior captain Kaley Watras that sparked a 7-0 run of its own to tie the game at 16-16.

The Blue Devils then took the lead for good heading into the half at the 2:28 mark after back-to-back three-pointers from freshman Camden Musgrave. Central would enter the break with a 26-23 lead.

Musgrave led the Blue Devils at halftime with six points off the bench and Malone led CCSU in rebounds at the half with five.

Following the intermission Mount St. Mary's came out strong with a 7-0 run to re-take the lead 30-26.

The Mountaineers held the lead for most of the second half extending it to as much as seven points with 10:39 left to play.

However, the Blue Devils responded once again and went on an 8-0 over the next four minutes and took the lead 42-41 with 6:37 to play after a pair of free throws from Musgrave.

Each team traded baskets over the final five minutes in a game that saw the score tied nine times. Then a layup from the Mount's Sarafina Arthur-Williams made it 49-48 MSM with just over a minute left and that saw the lead change for the final time.

Free throw shooting was crucial in the victory for the Mountaineers down the stretch. Although the Mount struggled from the line in the game, shooting only 56.0% on the night, they connected on five-of-eight free throw attempts, including three-of-four from Kayla Belanger-Finn, in the last minute to secure the victory 54-50.

Malone recorded her first career double-double as a Blue Devil with a game-high 15 points and season-best 10 rebounds. Malone finished the game five-of-seven from the field and five-of-nine from the free throw line. She is the third Blue Devil to record a double-double so far this season.

Malone was joined in double-digit scoring by Musgrave and junior Kayla Miller, who each had 10 points apiece. Musgrave was three-of-five shooting, including two-of-three from beyond the arc and was also a perfect two-of-two from the charity stripe. Miller grabbed seven rebounds to go along with her 10 points.

Central shot just 31.5% (17-54) from the floor and 26.7% (4-15) from three in the game. However, they did shoot 70.6% (12-17) from the free throw line, which was well above their average heading into the contest.

The Mount shot 43.9% (18-41) from the floor, 44.4% (4-9) from three and 56.0% (14-25) from the line in the game. They were led by Arthur-Williams who finished the game with 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Blue Devils will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 17 at home against Bryant for the first game of a three game home stand for the CCSU women's basketball team. Following the game against Bryant the Blue Devils will also play LIU Brooklyn on Monday, Jan. 19 and Wagner on Saturday Jan. 24 at home. Central and Bryant are scheduled for a 1 p.m. tip-off in Detrick Gymnasium this Saturday in the first game of a double-header with the CCSU men's team.
