Freshman Alexa Smead scored her fifth and sixth goals of the season, but the Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team fell behind in the second half and lost to Davidson on the road 11-5. The game was called at the 12:09 mark in the second half due to inclement weather conditions. Stephanie John, Ashley Mara and Lyndsey Mastandrea also scored goals in the loss.
The Blue Devils got off to a quick start in this one, with Smead taking the opening draw in for a score with only 12 seconds running off the clock. Back and forth action ensued with the teams trading goals and Davidson ending the first half with a 4-3 lead. Mara scored on a free position shot and John finished unassisted with just under seven minutes remaining in the opening frame.
Davidson held a 17-7 advantage in shots during the first period and forced the Blue Devils into nine turnovers. The Wildcats could not convert on any of their four free position opportunities in the first half, while CCSU converted their only free position attempt. Senior goalkeeper Alice Lee stopped nine shots in the first half to keep Central Connecticut in the game.
With the weather worsening, Davidson went on a five to one run over the first 13 minutes of the second half. Mastandrea scored the lone goal of the run for the Blue Devils. After Smead scored her second goal of the afternoon and Davidson put in a couple more, the game was called because of the weather with the scoreboard reading 11-5, Davidson.
John and Cara Momnie each recorded two draw controls for the game, while John lead the Blue Devils with two ground balls. Lee finished with 10 saves for the game.
The Wildcats finished with a 28-11 shot advantage in the game, with Becky Horton leading the way with three goals for Davidson. Jenna Mugele added two goals and an assist in the victory.
Central Connecticut will next play a week from today when they
will host Siena on Sunday March 8 at 1:00 p.m. Davidson will also
next play on March 8 when they host Monmouth at 1:00 p.m.
