Senior captain Stephanie John scored five goals and added one assist to keep Central Connecticut (0-11, 0-4) in the game, as the Blue Devils were upended by Northeast Conference leading Mount St. Mary's (4-8, 4-0) 17-8 at home Friday evening. The midfielder's five goals moved her into second place in CCSU annals for career points scored as she has now accumulated 112 in her four seasons as a Blue Devil. During tonight's game John passed former CCSU standout Abby Hayes who recorded 108 points during her time at Central Connecticut.
The Mountaineers, still undefeated in NEC action, scored the first five goals of the game. This cushion was all Mount St. Mary's needed as the Blue Devils never got the deficit to less than four goals throughout the game. Ashley Johnson got the scoring started for The Mount when she put away her first of four goals on the day only 1:38 into the game. She was assisted on that goal by Breana Waraksa, who tallied five more assists over the course of the next 58 and a half minutes. During the 5-0 run to start the game Johnson scored two, Katelyn Catanese put away two and Waraksa handed out three helpers.
With 10:40 remaining in the opening frame John got CCSU on the board with a free position goal, only to be countered less than two minutes later by a Mountaineer goal by Emily Kirby. The Blue Devils then cut the lead to four once more on an unassisted goal by Ashley Mara, but that would be the closest they would come and Mount St. Mary's led 8-3 at the half.
After the break The Mount went on an 8-1 run to put the game away. Kathleen Rossetti scored two goals during the stretch for the Mountaineers, while Waraksa tallied another assist and found the net herself during the run. John finished on her second goal of the night on another unassisted goal to break up the run by The Mount.
With under 10 minutes to play John scored three goals in a row to bring the Blue Devils back to within nine, as Mount St. Mary's led 16-7. The Mount got one more from Johnson with 37 seconds remaining and CCSU finished off the scoring when Lyndsey Mastandrea scored off of John's lone assist of the contest with only 18 seconds left in the game.
John and senior captain Alice Lee each picked up two ground balls to lead the Blue Devils. Lee, the goalkeeper also recorded nine saves in 50 minutes of action. Cara Momnie tallied a game high seven draw controls, giving her 40 for the season. She is on pace to break her own school record of 49 draw controls in a season. The sophomore now has 89 draw controls in her career and is in contention of breaking the CCSU record of 103 career draws in only two seasons. That is if she can catch her teammate, John, who currently has 99 in her career.
Johnson and Catanese each scored four goals for The Mount, while Waraksa tallied one goal and six assists in the victory. Kristen Jones and Jackie Kearney each picked up a game high three ground balls for Mount St. Mary's. Brigid McTavish picked up the win in net and tallied nine saves in the process.
Both teams will next be playing this Sunday, April 5 at 1:00
p.m. Central Connecticut will be hosting Monmouth and Mount St.
Mary's will be on the road at Quinnipiac.
