The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team fell to Iona by a score of 17-10 on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Blue Devils to 1-2 on the season. Central was led by four point performances by sophomores Meaghan McCurry and Betsy Vendel.
The Blue Devils first goal came 10 minutes into the game when McCurry passed to senior Michele Conway who found the back of the net to cut the score to 2-1. Central tied the game with 8:03 left in the first half when sophomore Mackenzy Ryan's free position shot beat the goal keeper and knotted the score at 5-5.
Vendel got the Blue Devils to within one goal of Iona heading into the break with an unassisted goal at the 3:39 mark. That score made it a 7-6 game.
Central worked quickly to tie the game in the second half registering a goal in under two minutes, as Vendel found junior Ashley Mara for her first goal of the afternoon. The Blue Devils pulled ahead moments later when McCurry notched the first of her three second half goals. The shot gave Central its first lead of the game at 8-7.
The lead did not last as the Blue Devils allowed 10 second half goals, and scored only four.
McCurry had three goals and an assist, while Vendel had a pair of goals and assists. Ryan and Conway also each had two goals in the game.
The Blue Devils return to action on Thursday night with a 5 p.m. game at Manhattan College.
